Out of interest, how long had any of you been doing martial arts before you considered yourself a martial artist?
Do you even consider yourself a martial artist, or just someone who does martial arts?
If you don't consider yourself a martial artist, why not, and at what point do you think you will?

I've only started doing any kind of martial art since 2 March 2004 (err... dates...)... so... I don't know. All I know is I'm not trying to be a "martial artist" but I'm "learning" martial arts.
How do you define "martial artist" anyway? Does a person have to practise/practice his art in a particular minumum timeframe or way in order for him to deserve the title "martial artist"?
If a "martial artist" is someone who "practises/practices" his particular art, how do you define "practise"... or "practice" in relation to a "martial artist"?
I guess I "practise" the art but haven't actually put it into "practice" yet. Hmm....
Ignore me...... :? |

I have looked and pondered this here question and I can't really think of an answer.
I have beed involved, in some shape or form, of some kind of pugilistic art form since the age of 6 and I am not sure if I qualify.
Is it determined by rank?
Experience?
Time?
How many times you have seen "9 Deadly Venoms"?
Titles?
Accomplishments?
Thats kind of a tough question..........
I must ponder more on this.... |

I think a Martial artist is defined more by their mindset then how long, or what they have trained. For example Judo, which i regard as a Martial Art - given its Jitsu base) isnt normally regarded as such by most of the people that do it, the same is true of boxing.
However both of those arts pressure test themselves often, they have to fight for what ever standing they obtain. In many ways they are better martial artists then the guys who tunr up to training once a week do a half assed version of whats being told to them and then go home without thinking of it again. |

Well said Dave, do you know how much it winds me up when I show something and people don't put the effort into actually trying to do it right.
These people would be better of staying at home just thinking about it, they would probably acheive more.
Best regards

When you stop just saying: "Yes, Master!"
And you start to ask: "Why?" |

And you start to ask: "Why?" Now that is a good responce, and I also find when you have that burning question in your head that always say's "What if" and then you try it just to find out what happens if you "What If"
Best regards

I think that Damien proved himself a real martial artist today when he demonstrated a lack of surprise and maintained his cool after I stabbed the "big man" in his "wee man".
True it was only a wooden knife and he shouldn't have put it in the way of his femoral artery. He gets my vote anyway. |
