Bart Hubbard, ah! another good player.

That’s the Guy, between you and Bart,I have been able to get a good idea and feel (as such) without actually participating in the tournaments on what the WEKAF format and sparring is all about.

AS long as you learn good attributes from the sport, and treat the sport just as a learning tool, whether you get a medal or not, you have already won one thing. Expeariance.

Nicely put Pat.

Sport I feel is very important for 2 reasons.
1. It helps promote the art to the general public.
2. Gives you a safe environment to pressure test certain skills.

I would also add it enhances ones self confidence.

Who would you be more worried up against, an FMAer who does not do sport and is good at drills, or an FMAer who does the art but also competes in the sport and pressure tests their skills???

that’s why I always smile when people say, "we don't do sports, we only train for the street and our techniques would be banned in sports as we train to kill"..

Yup that one really cracks me up, this is so true to the old Kung fu style I was training in, one year I wanted to enter the Sanshou tournament and the club I was training in got all high and mighty with we don’t enter tournaments and our techniques are not for sport BLAH –BLAH.And the following year ,there guys were allowed to enter,I think three of them took out there sections .Go figure mate Laughing

Like drills, sparring and sports are important tools that should not be neglected, but don't misunderstand or misuse the tools as they will not work properly. You never undo a screw with a plastering trowel, just in the same manner you don't plaster a wall with a drill.

Another good point Pat

My feeling is that full contact sparring of any king (boxing, wrestling, BJJ, judo, eskrima) gives you above all the ability to do stuff against a trained, resisting opponent. If you can throw a judo player or punch a boxer, you are doing pretty well. Likewise, if you can keep an armoured opponent at long range with a stick, or come inside and smash him up, you are on the right track.

I think it’s not so much the ability Jon,but more so confidence building in a safe environment.

My feeling is that the WEKAF stuff suffers from the problem of the other guy not playing the same game - ie you are doing it for real and they are just pillow fighting.

Thanks Jon, that’s what I was trying to get at. Also the judges and referees need to be on the same page as well as the fighters.

My preference is WEKAF. Why? Because That was the one and only method of stimulated training that I got at the time by Danny Guba and Greg Henderson. We (students), never knew or even thought soft sticks ever existed. We sparred with the big and heavier cane sticks they make cane furnitures out of not with the sparring sticks that are used today so a hit was still "ouch!"

Emphasis was drilled into us to spar as if we had no armour on. Footwork played a big part in positioning to effectively "hit and split". Evasive tactics drilled into students with and without armour on. Any toe to toe sparring was stopped and students were restarted again until a more technical approach was observed from players. Emphasis on techniques both defense and offense were also just some of the pointers that can be remembered during training.

A bull in the ring had to be circled. Being chased by the bull, you made HIM run in a BIG circle. Rolling Eyes Back peddling was a no-no............ Shocked

So training was kept as realistic as we could imagine and feel when sparring WEKAF style.

It would have been choice to have experienced soft stick sparring and other ways mentioned by you all on this thread. The actual feeling of being hit without armour on is certainly a "wake up call". There is no imagination, just pain!!! Twisted Evil

Hey! Pain is my freind, especially when dished out on an opponent Twisted Evil

I can honstly say, the WEKAF of today and the WEKAF I first started in are two completely different animals, but saying that, both had their advantages and disadvantages. I am lucky in that I got the chance to play in the early days up until recently so can appreaciate and dislike the changes in the same breath.

I played 'Old School' WEKAF with Master Vince Palumbo. Hardest fight of my life. And I played new School as well as using Old School against New School in Cebu in 1998. Worked a dream. But as they say, unless you have lady luck on your side on the day then it does not mater anyway. Wink

And I know what some mean when they say the judges and referees should be playing the same game, I have some old video footage that would make your eyebrows fall off in shock Shocked .

I preffer padded stick because I like fighting "caveman" style Twisted Evil

To me, it IS more like a street fight than witiking your a$$ off.
I have never seen a streetfighter use wekaf rules in a fight.

I don't mind the pain(sick like that Twisted Evil )
and when you get hit proper like, you KNOW it!

I like hitting hard and getting hit hard.

Besides; if it ain't hard, it ain't worth a F...... Twisted Evil
