Having a look I can see some ptk influence on Rapid Arnis. From titles and grades (Magino'o and having student and fighter grades) to terminology (contrradas, saksak and pakal grip for daga..).

What about the technical aspects? I read on the RA London website that ptk influenced the knife stuff.

What else?

Well there is some stuff in the Espada 'Y' Daga, single stick, and well most areas. A lot of styles have played an influence on Rapid Arnis at some stage and PTK was one of the first styles I was taught when I was with Bob Breen. So it is hard to say. like anything over the years one thing tends to bleed into another and I see more and more similarities than differences in the styles now.

Sorry to be so vague.

Best regards

Pat

Well, this topic came about (in part) last night, as Clint and I were trying to figure out the syllabus material you gave him Laughing

I've only seen the ptk of Bill McGrath in the series of tapes pekiti tirsia international did a few years ago. (There's an overview, 5 attacks subsystem, doble baston, mano-mano and empty hand v knife tape). The content of the system is vast. It's my understanding that their contradas come after abecedario (which means something completely different to what it does in Doce Pares...). The approach is way different to other systems I've trained which were very much block and counter/abecedario methods.

Are the contradas early on in the RA system block and counter, or direct striking?

Sorry for not replying to this sooner Mike, I only just noticed it Embarassed The Contradas in RA are very much striking contradas, but saying that the term is interchangable, so we do have a mixture of both PTK and DP versions.

The Contradas tend to come in to play in RA as you are approaching the senior levels (e.g. Blue 2, Brown etc) and we do interchange them with the weapons as well.

The 12 Contradas for instance is learning how to use the 12 angles of attack to counter the 12 angles of attack.

For instance, you can use the angle 1 to counter all 12 strikes, angle 2 to counter all 12 strikes, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc etc.

You can also use, lets say the angle 5 for instance as a starting possition, you are preparing to fire your angle 5 but your opponont is just that bit quicker off the mark than you and he could lets say be applying an angle 8, you can either adjust your body possition to apply your angle 5 or adjust your angle 5 to directly counter to attacking weapon arm of the opponent.

It is teaching you that what ever you initially intended to do, you may have to make adjustments during a confrontation and adapt to the situation as well as showing you that your attacks can also be counters, if you get what I mean.

So there are a couple of ways to apply the contrada we use.

Hope that helps
