I’ve never actually seen any Arnis work using a long stick or basically something that requires 2 hands. Are the movements different from those used with a standard stick? I wonder because in doing some general sparring in a Krav Maga session with improvised weapons recently. We started using broomsticks, golf umbrellas and baseball bats and we found them difficult to control. The 12 angles of attack seemed a bit cumbersome – where were we going wrong?

The strikes and counters are basically the same, if your right handed your main gripping hand is your right, the left will then have a sort of semi grip to it to allow you to comfotably go through the striking patterns and drills. If you have done the box, punio and tres tres drills with the single stick, then doing them with long stick is not that difficult.

It gets interesting when you close the gap to disarm and take out the opponent, that's when the real difference takes place.

The one thing you will find with long stick is you have to have good footwork, angling and possitioning otherwise you do get hit.

The whole principle is My favorite saying "Technically your supposed to get out of the way" Twisted Evil

Very effective if done properly, very dangerous to you if it is not.

The Dog Brothers guys have some nice staff material (although the staff dvd is a bit basic, some of the others, like cycle drills have some nice stuff).

Plus some of their staff fights are available online, and look mighty painful.

I recently saw a video of Pat with the long stick, and it looks very effective. It's easy to see where the movement and angling become very important too. Uppercuts could be pretty nasty... lol Shocked
