Hello. I'm Googling these two terms today... and I wanna know what you people know about these.
They say that Kuntaw was originally a Chinese system, Kuntao (or 'way of the hand'). They also say that Kuntaw was brought into the Philippines when the Chinese fled Communist China for greener/free-er pastures. Fil-Chi intermarriages then resulted in the spreading and evolution of the art.
I'm curious what the Tausog Kuntaw is about. (The Tausogs are an indigenous ethnic group and still exist today.)
On the other hand, Kalintaw... I haven't read much about this yet. All I know is that this originated in Pampanga. Tried to search Wikipedia but its in fookin Kapampangan! Should ask my ex to have it translated. Grr...

There are a couple of forms of Kuntaw/Kuntao, one is chinese Kung Fu based with it's own unique Pinoy flavor or plabor if you like  the other is kuntaw silat which is the muslim art from Mindanao and shares it's are with the silat of Indonesia and Malaysia some would argue that they are not FMA and bear no relation to Arnis / Eskrima by they are still FMA as they are based in the Philippines.
Kalintaw is another style of Arnis / Eskrima and is not Kuntaw/Kuntao.

The system is based in the PI and headed up by GM Carlito Lanada
Kuntao is the normal term used for Chinese martial arts as practised in SEAsia. Not recent imports, but stuff that has been there for a good few years and has taken on some of the flavour of the area. So you find people in Indonesia who train with a machete instead of a Chinese broadsword.
Some styles become more modified than others, so Kuntao Macan is very silat-like, but Ngo Cho Kun Kuntao is basically a style of KungFu that is mainly practised outside of China.
The term KUNTAO is south Chinese (Fukien I think) ancan be broken into 2 parts:
KUN - fist
TAO - Way
(Like Jeet Kune Do - Intercepting Fist Way)
The term "Kuntao Silat" that is used a lot in magazines is primarily a USA creation, from the likes of Uncle Bill de Thouars, which he uses to label his personal blend of things.

I'm wondering if anyone knows about the Tausog Kuntaw... anyone seen it? I'm more interested in the "Filipinized" version of Kuntao. hehe (I want anything that's Filipino!!! gawd, I miss my dried fish!) |

| Sorry to revive an old thread but a simple google search on 'Kalintaw' brought me onto this forum. Right now I'm on holiday in the Philippines for a few weeks and am lucky to be training with Punong Guro Galo D. Lalic (www.kalintaw-galo.com). He is a very enthusiastic man and the style does originate in Pampanga, and has passed down the generations. If anyone has any questions to pass forward, I will ask him on our next session. |

Please send him my best regards, I met PG Galo D. Lalic in Angeles in 1998. I was with Mike & Kris Dunnage and John Harvey. I was the Ginger headed one  A truely inspirational man and great ambassidor to the FMA and Kalintaw.
