Quite a few of us have trained in the Philippines, myself and my wife Lucy try to go back as often as we can.
What is it like? Well all I can say it will improve your FMA 100 fold, what many think FMA is here in the west is a different kettle of fish over in the PI, they teach with a real passion and with national pride and that shows. Plus the humour that goes hand in hand with the top class training is second to none, it's an expeariance, if you get the chance you would be a fool to turn it down.
As for who I have trained with and what they are like, I think I will have to write a couple of books on that subject.

First of all you need to decide where your going, Manila or Cebu. I prefer Cebu simply because it is more relaxing so you can have a holiday as well as train.
Then you have to decide who you want to train with or which style/system, there are lots to choose from
Then of course when do you wish to go, what sort of budget do you have, e.g. Which type of accomadation would you prefer, do you prefer something at the low end, no mod cons and very basic, just somewhere to put your head down so to speak. Middle range (what we may consider upper middle) or high end with everything on hand, bar, meals, good aircon, good service etc.
Once you have decided this it is always good to get an introduction or you could well find you may meet up with someone who claims to be a bonifide instructor and willo charge you the earth to train, bearing in mind the average good wage is about £10 (£20 USD) per week, so when some people seethe westerner with a disposable income of what could amount to a couple of years you cant but blame them for taking advantage. Remember they have bad people in the Philippines too although I must say in general the majority of the Filipino's are the freindliest people you could ever wish to meet and if they take you to heart it is like being a member of the family.
Trust is a major aspect of Filipino life and obviously if this is your first visit, they will not know you and therefore will not know whether to trust you, they will treat you with total respect but will keep you at arms length until they get to know you which in turn could meen that they may only show you very basic skills.
Also when you are out there you will have to treat everyone with respect, remember you are in their country and you are their guest, I know it souds obvious but you would be surprised just how many people I have seen come a cropper for having that old Englishman Abroad attitude.
Filipino's have their own very unique take on everything in life and if you embrace it you will have the time of your life, if you shun it it can be an uncofortable place to be. They accept you for who you are, faults an-all but they accept you even more if you at least try to understand their culture and way of doing things. But that is the same the world over.
So, when are you thinking of going out to the PI? Where do you think you would like to train? And who do you think you would like to train with?
I will be out there with some of my people in late June ad for all of July so we may be able to point you in the right direction.
