Kia Ora Pat,
I have seen some footage of you & ?? demonstrating what I presume is Black eagle society format, at one of the Wekaf world tournaments (many moons ago (94/96?), I think it was around the beginning of the Black eagle Society. (Jump on me if I’m on the wrong track Pat lol),
But going by what I seen on that footage, basically anything goes to a certain degree.
So my main questions are, what are the rules, to play Black Eagle Society format?
And who can play at the Black Eagle Society Gatherings?
Before I became aware of my health issues, we did play every now and then (Not as much as I wanted to lol 3 times in the last year) .With live stick and helmet and incorporated kicks and grappling. Learnt some reality lessons very quickly lol, I say what we did was a minor version of what you guys do regularly. I believe this type of format is good to test your skills, But is not for everyone. Which brings me to one more question for you Pat; will the black eagle society be incorporated with the rapid arnis NZ group?
Look forward to your reply Pat
Cheers

Give Clint's guys a chance! They're only just getting used to being hit with padded sticks! |

Hi Rick,
Yep that was Black Eagle you saw at the WEKAF 98 event, I was fighting a JKD guy called Neil McLeod, many people were offered but no one but Neil and Lucy would play, only problems was no one wanted to play with Lucy.
Yes it is basically anything goes with a normal stick, GM Diony tried to get us not to use kicks etc, we juct winked at each other and ignored him
I heard a couple of American guys saying before we started that we would problably take it easy but much to their shock and surprise we just went for it. Once GM Diony seen we were very serious even though we were both Brits, he shouted stop. Hahaha!
One of the Dog Brothers was in the crowd watching at the time (cant for the life of me remember his name, just remember he was BIG) and we had a long chat and giggle after.
The Black Eagle Society was born in 1991, but we did not have a name yet and no one except myself and Simon Wells (Co Founder) would play, we fought each other at Bob Breen's Academy with no armour at all for 10 minutes (Jeez that hurt) and Bob and John Harvey were watching, they both say we had a screw loose. It took us up to 1996 before we could convince anyone to play this format, and it was then we came up with the name, so officially the Society was formed in early 1996 at the first gathering in Enfield, Middlesex.
Best regards

,I was thinking more in the future there Mike
So Pat,
Will the black eagle society be incorporated with the rapid arnis NZ group in the future

Lol,
So is there a time limit when playing or is it just play until one person gives up as such? The times that we have played, we played until we were exhausted or opponent gave up.

Awesome bit of history there Pat. I didn’t realize it took 5 years to convince people to play in BE format.
I actually thought BE was part of your Rapid Arnis sparring format, as in that was your way of sparring. WEKAF and soft stick format was secondary.
Ok Pat, another Question for ya.
What is the difference between your BES format of fighting and Dog brother’s format of fighting?
Cheers for the informative reply Pat.
Take care

So Pat,
Will the black eagle society be incorporated with the rapid arnis NZ group in the future Absolutely, it is a requirement for all those wishing to pass instructor ranks.

What is the difference between your BES format of fighting and Dog brother’s format of fighting? I would say there are a couple of main differences, 1st we go for 3 minute and they do 90 seconds, and secondly and most importantly we try to stick to FMA without adding in BJJ, Krabi Krabong etc, and very few people go to the ground although it does happen. We see it as a way of testing our FMA skills in a pressure environment. We have no winners and no loosers and therefore no egos.
Hope that helps.
