Doce Pares Philippine Martial Arts
more than just Fighting with sticks
By Richard Mitchell
Doce Pares organization was formed with 12 people (8 canete brothers & 1 nephew & 3 Saavedra’s ) (then rose to 24 members) compromising of various styles of Eskrima in 1932,With great determination and passion by these founding members , They were able to evolve and mix all these styles into the one style of Doce Pares and pass these on to the 2nd generation of Doce Pares students, One person that stands out with evolving these systems and maintaining and keeping to the true essence of these systems from the original members is Dionisio “Diony” Canete ,Son of Yoling “Euligio” Canete who was president of the Doce Pares Society from 1932 -1988 (Euligio was re-elected 56 times as president ,Right up to the time of his death in June 1988 at the age of 88 ) Ask most people if they have heard of Eskrima , Arnis or Kali ,And the majority will say isn’t that stick fighting ,Eskrima is not just about stick fighting .Stick fighting is part of the sport side of Eskrima .There is also the self protection side of Eskrima (unarmed combat) and of course the art it self ,This is where you learn the how’s ,Why’s ,When’s ,What's and concepts of the art ,Some would say it is the science of the art .I will Briefly explain what the tools are in Doce Pares Eskrima .The Doce Pares style can be broken down to seven components to make up the Doce Pares Multistyle.
The seven components are :
Single stick
Double stick
Espada Y dagger ( Stick and knife techniques )
Mano-mano (Empty hand techniques )
Baraw (Knife techniques )
Long blade
Sayaw (Forms /patterns or katas)
Solo stick
The strong hand wields a stick and serves as the primary offence ,the empty hand is used mainly for defense ,Focusing on controlling the opponents weapon hand .Twirling techniques and amarra are taught to develop wrist flexibility ,Strength and coordination ,Which enhances the ability to generate power and speed.
Single stick techniques can be practiced in long (Largo ) range ,Medium ( Medio ) and close (Corto ) range. The Largo range is characterized by evasive foot work /angling and fast continuous strikes to the opponents weapon hand ,Using the tip of the stick . The Medio range is characterized by the checking and counter strikes .This is where you will see the infamous Tapi-tapi ( checking and trapping ) come into play .The middle of the stick is being used to strike in this range.
Corto range is characterized by the curve /butt strikes ,Simultaneously using the Tapi-tapi so as to enter into the locks ,holds and takedowns .
One basic format which is the base to all the systems in this style is called Abecedario .This is where you learn 12 basic strikes ,12 counters , 12 disarms and progressing to sparring.
This component was largely implemented through Lorenzo (1st grandmaster for the Doce Pares society )
and Teodoro Saavedra (one of the original members of the Doce Pares society)
Double stick
When two sticks are used (one in each hand ).You will be able to see flowing combinations of attack or one stick defending and the other stick counter attacking. Largo /Medio range is the preferred distance when training in Sinawalli drills .Sinawalli is striking /twirling patterns executed with the sticks by yourself .When a partner is used for Sinawalli drills it is called Pinki-pinki .The skills learnt here carry over to the rest of the components Mano-mano ,Single stick and checking ,Espayda Y dagger ,Baraw .Sinawalli drills improves coordination and enhances the Tapi-tapi principle.
This component was largely implemented through Felimon Canete (one of the original members of the Doce Pares society)
Espayda Y dagga
The right hand wields a stick /long blade and serves as the primary offensive .The left hand holds a knife and is used for both offensive (thrusting and slashing ) and defensive ( blocking , checking and locking ).
coordination drills ,Footwork drills ,Tapi-tapi drills are all incorporated .
The last part of training is learning the complex Espayda y dagger locks ,Disarms and takedowns.
Totsada Y Largada is one of many fundamental drills to be taught in Espayda Y dagger .
This component was largely implemented through Felimon Canete (one of the original members of the Doce Pares society)
Mano-mano
Mano-mano is the empty hand techniques ,kicking techniques ,Dumog techniques ( locks ,disarms ,takedowns )
you could see Thai boxing , Kickboxing ,Boxing ,Grappling with the incorporation of open hand blocks ,Strikes ,Elbows ,Knees , Kaw-it . The footwork , Strikes ,Blocks that you do with the weapons ,You can execute with empty hands .It all blends in with each other.
This component was largely implemented through Felimon Canete (one of the original members of the Doce Pares society)
Baraw ( knife )
The format for the Baraw is similar to the solo stick .A lot more emphasis is on the Tapi-tapi principle ,The basic thrusts ,slashes ,hooks are learnt ,blocks and parry’s to the strikes are then learnt .Counterattacks ,locks and disarms are then learnt .Training then progresses to knife V’s knife and two man drills that teach practical attack/defense/counterattack combinations as well as continues flow .
This component was largely implemented through Jesus Cui and Vincent Carin ( original members of the Doce Pares society)
Long blade
The format for the long blade is similar to the single stick format ,with less emphasis on the amarra and more on evasive footwork.
This component was largely implemented through Felimon and Euligio Canete (original members of the Doce Pares society)
Sayaw
You will find all the basic fundamentals in the forms from stances ,footwork ,twirling ,striking ,blocking .
There are 12 forms .The oldest and longest form ,which is also the most physical exhausting is the so called San Miguel which is the last form in the Doce Pares multi-style system. Most of the forms were created and introduced between 1930-1960 by the original masters of Doce Pares ,and except for some slight modifications ,they have retained their original movements .
This component was largely implemented through Felimon Canete (one of the original members of the Doce Pares society)
Dionisio Canete wanted a logical and methodical curriculum, That would preserve the essence and styles of Eskrima ,that was taught by the founding members ,Hence the reason for the 5 year training curriculum ,with room for modifications ,based on further research ,experimentation and creativity on a regular basis ,the above components are just the tip of the iceberg on what Doce Pares can offer ,there are 3 core elements to all martial arts including Eskrima ,they are
The art
This is where you learn the how’s ,why’s ,when’s ,what's and concepts of the art ,some would say it is the science of the art.
Sport
Stick fighting is part of the sport side of Eskrima, along with kickboxing, boxing
Self protection unarmed combat, remembering this art was designed for combat ,the survival of the Filipino people dependent on there skills ,no flashy techniques were used .
so you see ,there is more to Eskrima than fighting with sticks.
Resources for this article was gathered from Doce Pares web sites and Grandmaster Dionisio Canete’s book
