Hi all.
Anyone include whips in their training?
When I started my original instructor occasionally did a bit of bullwhip stuff ( think he learned from "Momoy" Cante in the PI, or maybe Abner Pasa), but it way never regular syllabus.
I know it shows up in other systems - San Miguel Eskrima, Pananandata Marinas, Warriors/Balitok, and Sayoc to name a few. And I've heard it referred to in and Inosanto kali context.
How about Rapid Arnis?
We've a few South Africans in our group, and we've been playing with sjamboks, a semi-rigid african whip about 4-5 ft long. They're scary as all hell when you strike a bag with them, but we haven't figured out how safely spar with them.
Any thoughts? |

Never had the opportunity to train with the whip, so it's not in RA at the moment, but who knows what the future holds.
Did you know that many Filipino's used to attach the barbed end of the tail of a stingray to their fighting whips, Now that is going to hurt and do a lot of damage.
Will ask some of the old timers when I am in Cebu next time to see if anyof them still practice.
Another item of interest to add to my ever growing list of things to do when in Cebu.
Best regards
Pat |

All I can say is;
if you are going to "dip into whips";regardless of size....
WEAR FACE PROTECTION!
And try to find someone who is used to using them to teach you.
I used to dabble with them back home in north carolina.
When I was learning "cutting", I got cocky one day ( girls were close by too) and tried to cut a small vine with an overhand swing.
Ya know when the say the "pop" is the tip breaking the sound barrier?
It hurts like all righteous hell when it catches you across the face!
Cheek to cheek, right across the bridge of the nose, I kept blood blisters in the perfect shape of the braids for ages!
My brain immediately went into shock because the pain was so immense.
Great fun,though!
Just get the face protection!

We do a Whip / Double Whip) set of drills from blue on.
We use butt smashing and butt swinging as well as entangling.
Try Fig 8 and double arco with two whips, or
circular flywheel / ugbong / redondo type techniques.
Just do it slowly and generate flow like in Hubbud drills.
However FMA dont like letting the attacker have any control f their weapon so our main use is entangling while holding with both hands 1 near each end. |

I remember Peter Cullen (the guy that was teaching DBE up here in Auckland) throwing a whip around occasionally.
BTW, Lee, do you know if Peter is still around Auckland? I know his assistant Francis was in Wellington somewhere... |

| I think that guy supplies either the Sayoc kali guys, or Tom Meadows (I think) who does a whip and knife system "latigo y daga". I think Tom was one of Matt Marinas' guys. |

Hey Mike.
I think it is Tom Meadows that the guys supplies the whips to.I found this and thought that would be interesting reading for someone.
http://filipinofightingwhip.blogspot.com/
Also this is a link to Tom Meadows book, where he mentions Dan Inosanto and DocePares.

Do you know what the quality of the whips that the guy sells are like Mike? |

Cheers for that lee
Did you get your whip through "the Whipman"?
I have never played with the whip,
I understand using the whip helps with total body mechaics when it comes to the stick. Is that correct? |

If you have been well trained in the basics its really just like learning not to cut your own legs off with a sword.
Nearly all the flow is required (like nunchaku) otherwise the whip gets its own mind !!
Yes I got the whip from Peter Jack (who incidentally is a very good artist to boot), I met him buying rattan in Chch - and he started teaching myself and another instructor in eskrima - we played dumb. |

Apparently Pat is going to be doing some whip with GM Kano Canete next time we go to the PI....
I am selling front row seats now for anyone that wants a laugh ....because no matter how good Pat is, he struggles like the rest of us when learning something new.....so I cannot wait to see him whip his own A*R*S*E.

Love Lucy |

Hey Guys this link here has more info than the last link I posted http://www.paladin-press.com/authormo_0805.aspx
Mike the sjambok is mentioned in the above link
Lee is Peter Jack down your way now?
What protective gear do you wear, when you are learning / training with the whips?
Lucy I will grab a seat that is far enough away from the end of Pats whip |
