I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me with respect to the use of the 5 Foot Stick? I've had exposure to San Miguel Eskrima's "ananangkil" but it is used primarily as a training weapon to build attributes. Lately I've read descriptions of tapado systems (there is recent FMA Digest issue devoted to tapado) and you can find references to both "original" tapado and "modified" tapado systems on the web. I am interested in finding out if there are similarities between these tapado systems and what is taught in Doce Pares. Mike Vasquez has a book out on Modified Tapado, and there is also a tape of Master Danny Guba teaching tapado at a seminar in the U.K. a few years back; I was wondering if this is available in NTSC format?

The "deliberate miss" with the tapado that causes the rattan to bend and bounce off the ground again seems similar to the "banda" strike that I learned with the stick wherein you strike with a diagonal backhand downward all the way to the ground and then "bounce" (banda) up again on the same line (diagonal forehand upward).

Best,

Steve Lamade

Hi Steve,
I would say their are a lot of similarities and differences (typical FMA stylely Laughing ) in that the drills may differ slightly.

I know in DP drills such as Tres Tres are translated into the long stick, this is a drill we also use in Rapid Arnis.

RA also use the deliberate miss to spring from the floor to cause a whiping action back at the head of an opponent, but we have also developed other drills such as box pattern and punio sumbrada from PTK to fit into the long stick.

Apart from making your reactions faster than it would training with the standard stick, it also enhances your footwork and body angling as the weapon moves 2 to 3 times faster than the standard stick.

If you start off holding the long stick as you would a normal stick and then apply any of the single stick drills you know, then place your left hand (if right handed) under your right hand and have a loose grip this will give you a good idea of how to transfer the single stick drills, you will notice that you have to move more and your blocks/counters have to be more presise, start off slow and work up to a good speed and power.

It is all about technique at this point, get it wrong and get whacked Shocked

I will be filming a training DVD on this subject later in the year and I was teaching one of our members this weekend who filmed it, maybe they can place some of the footage up on You Tube.

I did not know there was video footage of GM Danny teaching long stick, I would be interested in seeing it myself, but I doubt that it is in NTSC format at the moment as most of his training stuff is just available in PAL on DVD.

Mind you I am told most DVD players nowadays will play all formats NTSC and PAL, not sure if it is true though.

Hope that helps

I believe that is covered by:

"technically, you're supposed to get out of the way"!
